Google earth looks to the skies

Google Sky, is now part of the Google Earth offering, Lior Ron, product manager for Google Earth announced Wednesday.

A sky button has been added to the latest Google Earth version, which toggles the view from earth to sky. The data set includes over 100 million stars.

With the sky view, it is possible to explore the distant star systems and watch planets in motion. Google Sky, incorporates various data layers, which highlight specific celestial bodies, including the planets and moon, with which most people are familiar.

Unlike Google Maps and Earth, Google sky is currently ad-free, though I can envisage some considerable interest in advertising spots in local and distant constellations and celestial bodies.

This brings to conclusion an agreement signed in September 2005 between Google and Nasa in which they committed to cooperate in the development of large-scale data management and distributed technologies.

Sky in Google Earth is available in 13 languages.
